Newcomerstown Historical Society - Step right into history.

Time To Tour Newcomerstown

You are invited to bring your tour group to see us here in Newcomerstown, Ohio. We will show you through one or both of our museums; we’ll feed you right in the middle of Main Street; and you can choose from our menu of entertainment offerings.  Our entertainments are priced according to the number of people in your group.  Check the end of each tour explanation for the prices.  You add the amount to the price of your meal, depending on whether you are bringing 45 / or 19 - 44 / or 8 - 18.

     Our Entertainments

 The Roy McFarland Revue

This is a country band that plays primarily music from the thirties through the seventies.  So if you like old-time country music, and toe-tapping rhythms, this group is for you.  They will play for forty-five minutes  for your group.  $3/$5/$6

"A Visit from Captain Reynolds"

Our premier living historian, Chris Hart, appears as Captain Reynolds, and will keep you enthralled with his tales of life on the Ohio and Erie Canal.  Don't miss his story about Miss Uno!  $2 / $ 3.50 / $4

Dinner Music by Mike Hoskins

Mike is a piano whiz!  You can choose a theme for his music (Seasonal, show tunes, Christian, etc.) or let him choose a program for you.  He will play through your meal.  $2 / $3.50 / $4

Our Living Village

Our little town comes to life around you as you eat your lunch or dinner,  with storekeepers opening their businesses, ladies doing their shopping, and the constable patrolling the area, all in early twentieth century costume.  We do different eras...would you like folks from the Victorian era, the twenties, the forties, the fifties, the sixties?  $2 / $ 3.50 / $4

"All Aboard for Newcomerstown!"

Don't miss this one!   Join narrator Dave Adair as he shows us slides of the days when the railroad was king.  These aren't your neighbor's vacation slides, though (ho-hum)...during the show you will meet such characters as the engineer, the fireman, the Pullman porter, the hobo, and some travelers up close and personal!  Why not choose a meal and then add this for your entertainment?  $2 / $3.50 / $4

"The Many Faces of Old Glory"

Here's something really special!  Vane Scott III  tells the story of how our flag came to be.  He shows twenty-eight beautiful full-sized flags as he regales us with fascinating and often humorous stories.  Choose one of our delicious meals and add this entertainment for an unforgettable visit to The Olde Main Street Museum.  $2 / $3.50 / $4

Main Street Gospel Singers

Are you bringing a group from your church?  The Main Street Gospel Singers would love to entertain you with their old-time church music.  They also like to sing for you at Christmastime, and put you in the spirit of the season with their Christmas carols.  They will even dress as Victorian Christmas carolers, if you'd like.  To add them to your program, just add $2/$3.50/$4 to the price of your meal.

"Something's Afoot at the Museum"

Here's a really unusual tour, full of lots of fun and surprises.  We don't want to tell you the whole story and ruin the surprise, but if we did, we would have to use the phrase "time machine."  We'll just tell that when you do this one, you will visit with Newcomerstonians of another era.  You have a choice of doing this one with light refreshments or with a full meal.  For light refreshments - $8 / $9 / $10.  For a full meal, add $4 / $5 / $6 to the cost of your meal.

"Carrie Nation Takes On Newcomerstown"

Do you remember the stories of Carrie Nation?  She was a famous temperance lecturer who traveled the country with her Home Defenders, ridding America of the evils of Demon Rum.  Well, she visited Newcomerstown in 1904, and visited Sam Douglass's Saloon.  Let us entertain you with Carrie's speech, and the enthusiasm of the Home Defenders.  Add this entertainment to the cost of your meal for $2/$3.50/$4.

"Traveling along the Towpath"

Would you like to know more about the Ohio and Erie Canal?  Let Dave Adair show you his slides of canal days right here in Newcomerstown.  You will also meet the canal boat captain, the hoggee (the little boy who led the mules), one of the fellows who built the canal, our local innkeeper, and some travelers.  Our living historians will make you feel that you are right there in 1840!   We will even have some folks from canal days be your servers!  $2 / $3.50 / $4

"Small-town America goes to War"

Here's a tour that's a whole package already put together for you.  This is our most popular tour, full of good food and great music.    Come eat your meal in the middle of Main Street, and watch it  come to life around you, populated by people from the World War II era. After listening in on the conversations of the folks back home, you'll be treated to a performance by the Victory Canteen Singers, a group who will entertain you with the nostalgic sounds of the forties.  the price for this one includes your meal of meat loaf, cheesy potatoes, succotash, a roll,  a drink, and a homemade dessert.   Come join us!  You can boogie down Main Street, eight to the bar!  $15 / $17 / $20

Tea Tours

We are currently planning themed tea parties for our guests.  We have done tea parties for local people, but we are now adding this to our tour repertoire.  Plans are to have "A Victorian Tea Time," a forties-themed one called "Tea Time on the Homefront," a fifties one called "Happy Housewives' Tea Party," and one tentatively called "Tea Party at the Redneck Bed and Breakfast."  No kidding!  Watch this space for more information.

"Dinner at the Tavern"

This one will be coming soon, after we make some repairs to our fireplace.  Your small group of 8 or fewer will have dinner in the original tavern.  The meal will be cooked in the fireplace, just as it was "back in the day."  It will be served to you by folks in 1850's costume, and the room will be lighted by oil lamps and candles.  More info here soon...
